Caring For Sensitive
Dry skin occurs when the body does not produce enough sebum to form a protective barrier over the skin, leading to dryness and irritation that can make the skin susceptible to inflammation. It can happen to all areas of the body, including the face, arms, legs, heels, and abdomen.
How to identify sensitive skin
Skin that is sensitive will have blotchy rashes that can be painful to touch. It tends to become irritated very quickly and can develop an itch that is painful to scratch. The skin is generally dry, flaky, tight and uncomfortable. Direct sunlight and heat often cause the skin to flare up, making it feel irritated.
The causes of sensitive skin
Allergic reactions, hormonal imbalances, stress and genetic factors all play a part in skin sensitivity. It’s also worth noting that any skin type can experience sensitivity at one time or another. Diet is another factor that can influence sensitivity; a lack of nutrients and insufficient hydration are the main culprits. People with sensitive skin should consider taking a daily dose of Omega 3 Fatty acids, which would strengthen the skin and provide extra moisture. Foods like salmon and other kinds of oily fish, walnuts and flax seeds all contain high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids.
Fragrance, colourants and certain chemicals and preservatives should be avoided as they can aggravate and damage skin causing it to become sensitive. Seasonal changes like fluctuating temperatures and humidity also contribute to sensitivity.
Those that suffer with sensitive skin should avoid:
• Harsh cleansers, soaps, body washes and shampoos that foam excessively.
• Products with fragrance.
• Brightly coloured bath and body products.
• Fabrics such as wool and mohair that scratch and irritate the skin.
• Hot spicy foods that can cause redness.
• Alcohol and coffee that dehydrates the skin.
• Direct sun exposure.
Luckily there are many skin products that are designed especially to care for sensitive skin. These help moisturise, soothe and build up its defences.
